Amed forum strengthens Kurdistan-Turkey relations

Peace and Social Freedom Forum highlights humanitarian cooperation and growing economic ties between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey.

The Peace and Social Freedom Forum concluded this week in Amed under the slogan “Together” (Bi Hev Re), bringing together Kurdish and Turkish officials, lawmakers, academics, and civil society representatives to discuss social issues, humanitarian challenges, and regional cooperation.
The forum, held from May 12 to 16, was attended by Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw, Duhok Governor Dr. Ali Tatar, the co-mayors of Amed and Adana, members of parliament, and representatives of several political parties.
Throughout the five-day event, participants took part in workshops, meetings, and presentations focused on education, art, women’s rights, and social development.
As part of the forum’s activities, the Center for Peace and Security (CAPS) at the American University of Kurdistan organized a special session for the governors of Erbil and Duhok to address migration and displacement issues in the Kurdistan Region.
During the session, both governors emphasized the Kurdistan Regional Government’s ongoing efforts to host internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees while continuing to provide humanitarian assistance and essential services. They described the Kurdistan Region as a safe haven for peaceful coexistence among diverse religious and ethnic communities and stressed that support has been provided without discrimination.
The governors also highlighted the importance of greater international cooperation to sustain humanitarian operations, preserve social stability, and ensure continued assistance for displaced populations across the Region.
Beyond its humanitarian focus, the forum is expected to contribute to stronger economic cooperation between Turkey and the Kurdistan Region. Officials and observers noted that the participation of Erbil and Duhok representatives could help expand trade and investment ties between both sides.
The forum followed a recent visit by Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to Turkey, where discussions focused on deepening economic relations and increasing cooperation in construction, agriculture, and commerce.
Turkey remains the Kurdistan Region’s largest trading partner, with more than 1,600 Turkish companies currently operating in the Region. Following the Prime Minister’s visit, efforts are underway to develop a new roadmap aimed at further strengthening bilateral trade and economic collaboration.
