The new directorate will oversee implementation of the Green Belt project, aimed at expanding
green spaces, reducing desertification, and improving Erbil’s environment
The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism has established a dedicated directorate for the Erbil Green Belt project and held its first official meeting with the ministry’s leadership.
Sasan Awni, Minister of Municipalities and Tourism, chaired the inaugural meeting with the Erbil Green Belt Directorate at the ministry’s headquarters.
The ministry said the new directorate was established to improve management, accelerate implementation, and directly oversee the comprehensive master plan for the project.
The foundation stone for the Erbil Green Belt was laid by Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, on October 30, 2025, marking the beginning of the project’s implementation.
The Green Belt is one of the KRG’s major environmental initiatives. The project aims to expand green cover around Erbil, reduce desertification, improve air quality, and enhance the city’s overall environmental landscape.
Once completed, the circular green belt is expected to have a positive impact on the climate and environment of Erbil and surrounding areas.
