Hussein to replace Ashwaq Jaff following her appointment as ambassadorand businesspeople
Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has approved Nazakat Hussein Hama Saeed to replace Ashwaq Anjamaddin Jaff as a member of the Iraqi parliament.
The IHEC Board of Commissioners unanimously approved Hussein’s appointment on Tuesday, according to the commission.
Jaff was previously elected to the Iraqi parliament as a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) candidate from the Sulaymaniyah electoral district in the 2025 parliamentary elections. She was later selected for an Iraqi ambassadorial position, leaving her parliamentary seat vacant.
Hussein received 2,168 votes in the 2025 parliamentary elections but did not initially secure a seat. Following Jaff’s departure from parliament, Hussein was selected to fill the vacant seat in accordance with the applicable electoral procedures.
The appointment comes after the Iraqi parliament approved a list of 93 candidates for ambassadorial positions in August last year. Eighteen of the candidates were Kurds, including 10 affiliated with the KDP and eight with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
The IHEC’s decision formally clears the way for Hussein to take up her seat in the Iraqi parliament.
