Kurdish documentary earns international festival nomination

The Kurdish documentary Life After Freedom, directed by filmmaker Shamal Hussein, has received an official nomination at the Ahmedabad International Film Festival (AIFF) in India, bringing international attention to the experiences and resilience of Yazidi Kurds after ISIS captivity.
The 22-minute film was previously screened in the United States and is now seeking further recognition on the international festival circuit.
Life After Freedom tells the story of young Yazidi Kurds rebuilding their lives after being freed from ISIS. It focuses on their efforts to move forward through marriage and family life despite the psychological trauma and hardships they experienced.
Through personal stories, the documentary explores the challenges survivors face as they try to establish stability and rebuild their futures. It highlights not only the lasting effects of conflict but also the determination of survivors to continue their lives and restore a sense of normality.
Hussein’s film brings attention to the human and social consequences of the violence committed by ISIS against the Yazidi community. By focusing on life after liberation, it presents a perspective that extends beyond the experience of captivity to examine recovery, relationships and the pursuit of a new beginning.
The film’s nomination in India, following its screening in the United States, marks another opportunity to introduce Kurdish documentary filmmaking and Yazidi experiences to international audiences.
Through its focus on resilience and rebuilding, Life After Freedom uses documentary filmmaking to share the stories of survivors and draw attention to the continuing challenges they face after escaping captivity.
