Efforts to remove obstacles to forming the new Kurdistan Regional Government and reactivating the Kurdistan Parliament have intensified as political parties continue their talks and negotiations.
Political officials say efforts to form the Kurdistan Regional Government’s 10th cabinet are continuing, amid a sensitive regional situation and growing political and economic challenges.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, speaking at the opening ceremony of the Sulaimani Summit for Economy, Investment and Development, said the political atmosphere between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) had improved.
“There is now a better atmosphere among the political forces in Kurdistan, between the PUK and the KDP. We hope it reaches a good conclusion, and everything is going well,” Barzani said.
KDP spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed said talks and meetings on forming the new government were continuing and that the results would become clear soon.
He said the KDP would announce the necessary information to the public regarding the government formation process in the coming days.
Hoshyar Zebari, a member of the Executive Board of the KDP Political Bureau, said the KDP supports forming a broad-based government. He described the PUK as an important ally with which the KDP has previous experience in joint governance.
Zebari said it was in the interest of the Kurdistan Region for the KDP and PUK to play a central role in forming the next government, while adding that no party or political faction had been excluded from participating according to the size of its electoral support.
KDP Political Bureau member Pishtiwan Sadiq also called for intensified efforts to form the new cabinet, saying the situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the wider region was sensitive and required political parties to accelerate the government formation process.
Sadiq noted that the formation of the new government had been delayed and said efforts to reactivate the legitimate institutions had intensified. He expressed hope that positive news would soon be announced to citizens, without giving a specific date.
Alongside the internal political discussions, representatives and diplomats from countries in the region and around the world have conveyed the importance of accelerating the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government. The issue is also considered important for the Iraqi government.
Political officials have stressed that the regional situation requires the Kurdistan political parties to intensify their efforts and reach an agreement on the formation of the new cabinet.
The efforts come as the Kurdistan political parties continue discussions on reactivating the Kurdistan Parliament and forming the 10th cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government. In another step, the KDP parliamentary bloc convened and called for the reactivation of parliament.
