The “Yad” Cultural Institute and Yekem Chira magazine held a special ceremony at the Cultural Centre of Salahaddin University to mark the 100th anniversary of theatre in Sulaymaniyah, bringing together government officials, political representatives, artists, and intellectuals.
The event highlighted the importance of theatre in preserving Kurdish culture, promoting national identity, and strengthening social awareness. Speakers also stressed the need for greater support for the performing arts to ensure continued artistic growth across the Kurdistan Region.
A documentary tracing the century-long history of theatre in Sulaymaniyah was screened, showcasing key milestones in the development of Kurdish theatre. Renowned artist Ahmed Salar also delivered a speech reflecting on the history, achievements, and challenges of Kurdish theatre over the past century.
The ceremony concluded with a tribute to veteran theatre artists from Sulaymaniyah whose careers have spanned more than five decades, recognizing their lasting contributions to Kurdish art and culture.
