A Call for Fairness

By | Dr. Nazaket Hussen

The continued steps taken by Baghdad that have significantly impacted the Kurdistan Region’s economy and the well-being of its citizens raise serious concerns about underlying intentions. Since 2014, when the federal government cut the region’s budget and other financial entitlements, the effect has been sustained economic pressure. In response, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) agreed to transfer 50 percent of its revenues—an arrangement widely seen as a difficult but necessary compromise to protect public salaries and essential services.
Despite these efforts, financial agreements made by the KRG have often been met with new conditions from Baghdad. Over time, these shifting justifications have disrupted regular salary payments, contributing to considerable economic and social hardship in the region. The ongoing delays, including the delivery of salaries only every two months, have placed a significant burden on citizens and affected their quality of life.
There is growing concern that these patterns reflect a broader attempt to limit the Kurdistan Region’s economic progress. Furthermore, the region has frequently found itself entangled in internal political disputes within Iraq, with salary issues sometimes used as leverage in broader power struggles.
The international community—especially those countries engaged diplomatically and politically with both Baghdad and Erbil—should take note of the growing impact of these policies. Continued instability in the Kurdistan Region could have wider implications for the political and economic stability of Iraq and the region. Constructive and timely diplomatic efforts are essential to address the situation and ensure that the well-being of ordinary citizens is no longer caught in the middle of political disagreements.
The Kurdistan Region has made consistent efforts to cooperate and meet a range of requests from the federal government. However, the ongoing challenges and lack of reciprocal commitment from Baghdad raise legitimate concerns about the future of this partnership. It is now more important than ever to pursue responsible dialogue and take concrete steps toward a framework that supports mutual respect, stability, and the shared interests of all citizens.
