Iraqi Election: Kurdish solidarity and Unified Discourse can preserve the rights

By Saadula Aqrawi

For the Kurdish people and the Kurdistan Region, this election will be more than just another political contest. It will be a defining moment that will shape the region’s future within Iraq. To secure Kurdish rights, strengthen autonomy, and protect the stability of the Kurdistan Region, Kurdish political parties must put aside their divisions and present a united front in Baghdad. When Kurdish blocs in Baghdad are divided, their influence weakens. Different agendas, conflicting alliances, and partisan rivalries create openings for other political forces to marginalize Kurdish interests. Without a unified Kurdish position, critical issues such as oil and gas management, budget allocations, the Peshmerga’s funding, and the fate of disputed territories, remain unresolved or decided without Kurdish consent.
The past few years have demonstrated how costly division can be. Internal disagreements between Kurdish parties have sometimes translated into conflicting votes and policies in the Iraqi parliament, diminishing the Kurdish voice. Meanwhile, Baghdad’s political blocs have become increasingly organized and strategic, often taking advantage of Kurdish disunity to pass legislation that limits the Kurdistan Region’s authority. Beyond Baghdad, internal divisions have also affected governance at home. The existence of separate administrative and security zones in the Kurdistan Region weakens the region’s ability to act cohesively and undermines public confidence. Ordinary citizens, frustrated by political rivalry, are calling for unity, reform, and genuine representation. A unified Kurdish electoral strategy could secure a stronger parliamentary presence, giving Kurdish representatives the leverage needed to influence key national decisions. Together, they can demand fair treatment for the Kurdistan Region, insist on the implementation of constitutional articles, and negotiate from a position of strength rather than vulnerability.
The next Iraqi parliament will face immense challenges, economic recovery, political reform, security stabilization, and regional diplomacy. In all these areas, Kurdish participation will matter. But to make that participation meaningful, unity is essential. The Kurdish parties must coordinate their platforms, agree on shared goals, and communicate clearly with their constituents about the importance of standing together in Baghdad. The future of the Kurdistan Region depends on wise leadership, cooperation, and a clear sense of purpose. History has shown that when Kurds stand united, they achieve remarkable progress; when they are divided, they risk losing hard-won rights and opportunities. The upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections offer both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge lies in overcoming the divisions that have long weakened Kurdish politics, the opportunity lies in building a unified Kurdish bloc that can defend the region’s rights and represent its people with dignity and strength.
Now is the time for Kurdish parties to rise above political competition and think of the collective future. Unity is not a political slogan, it is a national necessity. Only through solidarity can the Kurdish people preserve their rights, protect the Kurdistan Region, and ensure a stable and respected place within the federal Iraq.
