Lanya Qais, an 18-year-old Kurdish girl born in Norway, has been named Norway’s 2026 Young Athlete of the Year, making history as the first recipient to receive the award at the start of the year.
Lanya is the daughter of Qais Najmadin, a former Erbil SC player, and both her parents are UEFA-certified coaches now working in Norway. Following in their footsteps, Lanya became Norway’s youngest female coach, earning her UEFA B coaching certificate and leading Klemetsrud IL Football’s under-15 women’s team. She is also set to take on a key role as deputy head of youth at the Oslo Football Association, mentoring and supervising young coaches across local clubs.
Norwegian Sports Federation spokeswoman and Oslo Mayor Anne Lindbo praised Lanya’s achievements at the awards ceremony. “At just 13, she earned her C coaching certificate and has been serving Norwegian children ever since. Lanya’s innovation and dedication make her a standout in Norwegian sports.”
At the ceremony, Lanya celebrated her Kurdish heritage, arriving in traditional Kurdish clothing. “I am fortunate to have grown up in a peaceful and supportive country,” she said. “But I cannot forget the culture and authenticity of my homeland. This award is for the girls, women, and hard workers of my country. Long live Kurdistan.”
Her father added, “She is a talented Kurdish coach and the pride of every Kurd.” Lanya’s achievements highlight her dual role as both an athlete and a coach, inspiring young women in Norway and Kurdish communities alike.
