Preserving the National Discourse in an Era of Change

The Kurdistan Region is in the Post-Modernization Phase

By Larisa Muhammed

The post-modernity era is characterized by the disintegration of borders, the plurality of discourses and the rapid transformation of identities. At this stage, many societies are experiencing a kind of “intellectual confusion” because old narratives and entrenched ideologies are losing their power and are no longer able to respond to today’s needs. For the Kurdistan Region, this stage is not only a difficult test, but also an opportunity to redefine the Kurdish cause as an active and effective actor in the new global equations.
While the philosophy of postmodernism speaks of a “sinking of grand narratives,” the Kurdistan Region has not only been able to maintain its national narrative but also give it a new lease of life, thanks to a visionary leadership. Today, the region’s political discourse has moved from classic slogans to “constructive and diplomatic” discourses. This represents a deep understanding of the changes of the times, because in a world where everything is changing, only those entities with a “solid strategic center” and a “clear agenda” will be visible.
The development of diversity of opinions and different political activities within the Kurdistan Region is not a sign of weakness but a sign of the vitality of the region’s political system. Postmodernism teaches us that “multiplicity” is a source of power. The political authority in the region has been able to create a free space for this pluralism without allowing this ideological fragmentation to harm the unity and supreme interests of the nation. Here, the KDP, as a genuine force, has been able to become the “gathering point” that gathers and unites all the different colors around the project of building the state and protecting the region.
At the same time, the Kurdistan Region has used the tools of communication and diplomacy to convey the legitimate message of the Kurds to the decision-making centers of the world. This is an expression of “effective postmodernity,” which means the use of global tools to serve national goals. The ideological turmoil that has led to the deterioration of the social fabric in Kurdistan has been determined by the path of “political stability and economic development.”
Ultimately, the Kurdistan Region emerges in the context of postmodernity as a successful model that has been able to strike an unprecedented balance between “globalization” and “protection of national characteristics.” Preserving the discourse of national unity in the midst of all these rapid changes is the greatest political achievement that not only protects national security but also paves the way for the Kurdistan Region to remain a peaceful and progressive forum in the region.
