Baba Tahir of Hamadan: One of pioneers of Kurdish classical literature

Baba Tahir of Hamadan is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Kurdish classical literature and mysticism. Known as Baba Tahir Oryan (“the Bare” or “the Ascetic”), he was born in the Hamadan region and became renowned for his spiritual poetry, which blended deep faith, simplicity, and human emotion.
Although historians differ on the exact dates of his life, most place him between the 10th and 11th centuries. His life remains surrounded by mystery, yet his literary legacy has endured for centuries. The earliest historical references to Baba Tahir describe him as a respected mystic whose wisdom earned admiration from rulers and ordinary people alike.
Baba Tahir’s fame rests primarily on his celebrated quatrains, which were written in the Luri dialect and passed down through generations. His verses focus on divine love, longing, humility, and the spiritual journey of the soul. Unlike many poets of his era, he did not write for royal courts or material reward. Instead, his poetry emerged from personal devotion and a deep desire to connect with the Divine.
In addition to his poetry, Baba Tahir authored notable works in Arabic that reflected his theological and mystical thought, further demonstrating his intellectual and spiritual stature. His writings continue to inspire readers across the Kurdish world and beyond.
A devoted Sufi, Baba Tahir embraced a life of simplicity and contemplation. He spent much of his life seeking spiritual enlightenment and remained committed to the values of humility and self-denial. His tomb in Hamadan remains an important cultural and historical landmark, attracting visitors from across the region.
Today, Baba Tahir is remembered not only as a poet but as a symbol of Kurdish literary heritage whose timeless verses continue to resonate with readers seeking wisdom, faith, and beauty.
