Bawanur dam advances as KRG boosts water security

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) continues to prioritize water security and sustainable development, with construction of the Bawanur Dam progressing steadily. Once completed, it will become the third-largest hydroelectric dam in the region, following Dukan Dam and Darbandikhan Dam.
This year’s high rainfall has highlighted the critical role of dams and reservoirs across the Kurdistan Region. Beyond increasing water storage, these projects have significantly reduced flood risks in urban areas, underscoring their importance for both infrastructure and public safety.
As part of a broader strategy, the KRG is investing heavily in dam construction across the region. Several projects have already been completed, while others remain under development, reflecting a long-term commitment to safeguarding water resources.
Among these, the Bawanur Dam stands out as a key strategic initiative. Currently under construction and advancing rapidly, the project is expected to be completed by 2028, with the possibility of early delivery. Built using local expertise and labor, the dam is designed as an embankment structure measuring 880 meters in length and 20 meters in height, with a crest width of 9 meters.
With an expected generation capacity of 34 megawatts, Bawanur will become the region’s third-largest source of hydroelectric power. The project is being implemented by Zozik Group, Hydroconstructia, and Habika, with a total budget of 245 billion Iraqi dinars.
Beyond electricity generation, the dam is expected to deliver wide-ranging economic and environmental benefits. It will store up to 30 million cubic meters of water, help raise groundwater levels, and support agriculture by revitalizing tens of thousands of dunams of land. In the Garmian Administration, the project is also expected to combat desertification, strengthen water security, and boost fish production. Additionally, it is anticipated to contribute to the region’s growing tourism sector.
The Bawanur project is part of a larger KRG master plan that includes the construction of dozens of dams across the region. Key projects include the Mandawa Dam in Erbil, the Degala Dam in Sulaimani, the Taq Taq Dam in Koya, the Bakrman Dam in Duhok, and the Kalar-Bardasur Dam—each designed to significantly expand water storage capacity.
Through these initiatives, the KRG aims to build a more resilient water infrastructure, support agriculture, enhance energy production, and promote sustainable economic growth across the Kurdistan Region.
