As part of ongoing efforts to expand green spaces in Erbil, a large-scale tree-planting campaign was launched in the Serbasti (Park 32) neighbourhood to mark Kurdistan Environment Day.
The campaign was attended by municipal directors and representatives of various service departments. The Governor of Erbil praised the organizing teams and municipal staff for their efforts to improve the city’s environment, highlighting the Kurdistan Regional Government’s commitment to strategic environmental projects, including the Erbil Green Belt initiative and broader efforts to increase urban greenery and maintain ecological balance.
Following improved weather conditions, three nurseries under the Erbil Parks Engineering Directorate have begun a city-wide planting programme. The plan for this year includes the planting of 100,000 saplings and 56,000 flowers, including Euryops, marigold, nandina, boxwood, and roses, marking a significant increase compared to last year.
In recent phases, a variety of tree species such as lilac, albizia, bauhinia, dodonaea, Washingtonia palms, bottlebrush, and acacia have been planted. These plants are grown in local nurseries and are adapted to Erbil’s climate conditions.
Officials also announced that “Model Nursery 4” will be opened this year on the 120-Meter Road, as part of efforts to strengthen sustainable urban greening and improve environmental services in the capital.
