Iraq needs long-term anti-corruption strategy

By | Dr. Nazaket Hussen

In a previous editorial, The Kurdish Globe argued that Iraq must embark on a comprehensive national rebuilding effort after decades of conflict, instability, and institutional decline. Rebuilding the country requires more than restoring infrastructure. It demands stronger institutions, a healthier economy, political reform, and greater social justice.
The principles of coexistence, partnership, balance, and compromise remain essential to this process. Recent efforts to investigate corruption and arrest individuals accused of embezzling public funds are an important step toward restoring accountability. Recovering stolen assets and holding those responsible to account should remain national priorities.
These actions send a clear message that corruption will not be tolerated. They also serve as a warning to public officials who may be tempted to abuse their positions. Yet arrests alone are not enough. Iraq needs a long-term national strategy that prevents corruption rather than simply responding to it.
A comprehensive anti-corruption framework should ensure continuous oversight of public institutions, strict enforcement of the law, transparent financial monitoring of public officials, and independent auditing of government spending. Administrative reform, reduced bureaucracy, and stronger banking oversight are equally essential to closing the loopholes that allow corruption to flourish.
Ultimately, the goal is to build institutions where transparency, accountability, and merit leave little room for bribery, favoritism, or misuse of public resources. Every dinar recovered through anti-corruption efforts should return to the public treasury and be invested in improving services, developing infrastructure, and creating opportunities for the Iraqi people.
The fight against corruption should not be a temporary political campaign. It must become a permanent national strategy that strengthens the rule of law, restores public confidence, and lays the foundation for Iraq’s long-term stability and prosperity.
