Kurdish boxer Agit Kabayel becomes WBC heavyweight champion

Undefeated Kurdish-German heavyweight Agit Kabayel has officially been elevated to full WBC Heavyweight World Champion, marking a historic moment in boxing following the decision by former undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk to vacate his titles.
Usyk, who previously held the WBC, WBA, and IBF heavyweight belts, reportedly stepped away from his championship reign as he prepares for a final professional fight before retirement. His departure created a vacancy at the top of the division, prompting the World Boxing Council to elevate Kabayel, previously the interim champion and mandatory challenger, to full world champion status effective June 27, 2026.
The decision brings clarity to a heavyweight division that had been slowed by mandatory defenses and unification delays. Rather than extend interim arrangements, the WBC confirmed Kabayel as the rightful champion based on his ranking and consistent performances at elite level.
Kabayel’s rise to world champion carries strong cultural and symbolic importance, particularly for Kurdish communities worldwide. Born on September 23, 1992, in Bochum, Germany, Agit Kabayel comes from a Kurdish family originally from the Bakur region of Kurdistan. Throughout his career, he has represented both his German upbringing and Kurdish heritage, becoming one of the most prominent Kurdish athletes on the global sporting stage.
His achievement is widely regarded as historic, as he becomes the first professional boxer of Kurdish descent to win a recognized heavyweight world title. For many supporters, his success represents both sporting excellence and a moment of visibility and pride for Kurdish identity in international sport.
Kabayel learned of his elevation while traveling and expressed pride at reaching the sport’s highest level. While acknowledging that winning the title in the ring would have been his preferred path, he praised Usyk’s legacy and said he is ready to defend the championship against any top contender in the division.
Kabayel began his professional career in 2011 and has remained undefeated for more than a decade. He built his reputation through steady progress across European and international competition, developing into one of the most disciplined and consistent heavyweights of his generation.
He first rose to prominence by winning the European heavyweight title twice between 2017 and 2024. His career includes notable victories over experienced opponents such as Dereck Chisora, as well as statement wins against top contenders including Arslanbek Makhmudov, Frank Sanchez, and Zhilei Zhang. These performances helped establish him as a serious force in the division.
Known for his strong conditioning, tactical discipline, and pressure-based fighting style, Kabayel has become a technically complete heavyweight capable of competing with elite-level opponents. He now holds an undefeated professional record of 27 wins, including 19 knockouts, placing him among the top-ranked heavyweights globally.
With the WBC title now in his possession, Kabayel enters a new phase of his career where expectations will rise significantly. The heavyweight division is expected to move quickly toward mandatory defenses, with several leading contenders already positioning themselves for a title opportunity.
For Kurdish boxing fans, Kabayel’s achievement stands as more than a sporting milestone. It is a rare moment of global recognition for a Kurdish athlete at the highest level of professional sport, placing Kurdish identity on the world heavyweight stage.
As the division resets following Usyk’s departure, Kabayel stands at the center of a new era in heavyweight boxing, defined by transition, opportunity, and the emergence of a Kurdish champion on the global stage.
