Kurdish footballers shine as sports culture grows stronger

Rising talent, academy development, and regional stability fuel Kurdistan’s football success

The Kurdistan Region has witnessed significant and sustained development in the field of sports—particularly in football. Today, most major clubs within the Kurdistan Region and across Iraq are turning their attention to Kurdish players and coaches.
Thanks to the strong stability of the Region, new opportunities have emerged for Kurdish talent to advance and showcase their skills. This progress has made it clear to the world that Kurdish players are now well-represented in many major leagues.
The establishment of sports academies and training schools has become the foundation for nurturing young talent. Across cities and towns, national-level teams regularly practice and participate in competitions.
At the youth and junior levels, clubs like Erbil and Peshmerga have won championships over the past two years. At the Iraqi national level, Kurdish clubs have also achieved strong results—reflecting the overall growth of sports in the Kurdistan Region.
At the national team level, eight Kurdish players are currently part of Iraq’s lineup. Coaches at this level can no longer overlook the contribution of these high-performing athletes.
In the Iraq Premier League, Kurdish players have built a solid reputation and are now considered an essential force in strengthening Iraqi clubs. Teams such as Al-Shorta, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Zakho, Talaba, and Al-Karma—which this year made several major signings—have actively transferred Kurdish players to reinforce their squads.
Beyond Iraq, Kurdish players have also been signed by clubs in Iran, Kuwait, Cyprus, and pre-crisis Syria. Their presence is now visible in many regional leagues.
In football specifically, leagues outside the Kurdistan Region are increasingly seeking to strike deals with Kurdish players and coaches, thanks to the noticeable rise in performance and professionalism.
Football has become deeply woven into Kurdish culture. Discussions about club performance dominate daily conversations, and passionate supporters regularly fill the stands. The success or failure of teams carries a direct psychological impact on many people in Kurdish society.
