The Kurdish short film “Sea of Hope,” directed by Jibrail Abubakr, has been selected to compete for an award at the 26th edition of the International Science Film Festival in Australia.
According to Abubakr, 110 films were selected from 4,600 submissions for this year’s festival, which is regarded as one of the major science film festivals in the Southern Hemisphere. The festival features films and other productions that explore subjects connected to science.
“Sea of Hope” focuses on the devastating consequences of war and displacement through the experiences of civilians forced to flee their homes. The film explores the emotional and physical impact of displacement, following people who take dangerous journeys in search of safety and a dignified life.
The 26th edition of the festival is scheduled to begin in Australia on August 12, 2026, and will run for 18 days.
Abubakr has participated in numerous international film festivals. “Sea of Hope” has already received six award nominations in Turkey, adding to its growing presence on the international festival circuit.
