Sea of hope wins top honor at Warriors Film Festival

Short film by Kurdish director Jubrayil Abubakr gains international recognition

The short film “Sea of Hope,” directed by Jubrayil Abubakr, has won the Special Jury Award at the Warriors Film Festival, recently held in the United States.
Speaking about the achievement, Abubakr said the festival featured around 1,600 films from 100 countries, of which only 80 were selected. “Sea of Hope” was the only film representing both Kurdistan and Iraq and ultimately secured one of the festival’s top honors.
The director described the film as a powerful portrayal of the human consequences of war, focusing on civilians caught in its aftermath. Through a narrative centered on displacement, the film follows individuals forced to flee their homes, risking their lives along dangerous routes in search of safety and dignity.
Highlighting both emotional and physical struggles, the story sheds light on the realities faced by displaced people, including the constant threat of death and drowning during their journeys.
Since its release, “Sea of Hope” has been widely recognized on the international stage. Over a span of five months, the film has participated in 24 film festivals and has won seven international awards to date, marking a significant milestone for Kurdish cinema.
