Yezidis revive tradition with cultural ceremony in sinjar

After a five-year hiatus, Kurdish Yezidis in Sinjar have revived a cherished cultural tradition, organizing an annual ceremony to celebrate and preserve their heritage.
This year’s event took place at the historic Sharfadin Shrine, marking the first time the ceremony was held in Sinjar since the community’s return to the region. The celebration showcased traditional Kurdish Yezidi clothing from seven regions, including areas such as Bashiqa and Bahzani, highlighting the diversity and richness of Yezidi cultural identity.
A participant explained the significance of the event: “We came to this sacred place to display our traditional clothing, which represents the seven regions where Yezidis live, both in Iraq and beyond.”
The ceremony was organized and supervised by a volunteer group of local Sinjar youth, who worked to display attire from seven different countries. By doing so, the community aims to preserve and promote Yezidi traditions for future generations, reinforcing a sense of identity and pride among its members.
