The Kurdistan Region is a strong entity in the Middle East, particularly at the level of international community support, enhancing efforts for reform, resisting threats, and maintaining stability.
Despite facing many challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, disruptions in oil revenues, and budget cuts, the Kurdistan Region has effectively addressed these issues and maintained its resilience. Recently, numerous international leaders, such as the President of Turkey, the President of France, and several major global diplomats, have visited the region, demonstrating significant diplomatic engagement with the U.S., China, and European countries.
In an interview with The Kurdish Globe, Idris Ismail, a member of the Kurdistan Parliament, remarked, “The strong and decisive stance of the Kurdistan Region, along with its reform initiatives, addresses significant economic and administrative challenges. This approach aims to mitigate crises and resolve numerous financial and operational issues, benefiting the region and its people. The region continues to face considerable internal and external pressures, but ongoing efforts are directed towards overcoming these challenges and ensuring that the Kurdish population ultimately benefits from the region’s robust and proactive measures.”
He added, “The international support for the Kurdistan Region is substantial, reflecting its political and diplomatic capabilities at the level of Iraq, the region, and internationally, advocating for the protection of Kurdish constitutional rights.”
Additionally, he noted, “Kurdistan’s significant global recognition, especially through Davos forums, Munich conferences, and engagements with Arab leaders, underscores its influential role in the region.”
Dilshad Jalal Kamil, a writer and political observer for The Kurdish Globe, stated: “Reflecting on the events of October 16, when Iraq and regional militias attacked and occupied the Kurdistan Region, followed by a political and diplomatic blockade, we witnessed significant support from France. At that time, France backed the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, reinforcing its commitment to the Kurdistan Region and safeguarding its political and constitutional integrity amidst the complex and troubled Middle East.”
He added, “Of course, this support has not come without reason. It reflects the Kurdistan Regional Government’s proactive humanitarian, political, and diplomatic efforts in the past. The KRG’s work in sheltering over two million refugees from Iraq and other regional countries has garnered significant international attention and support for the diverse religious and ethnic communities living in the Kurdistan Region.”
“International support for the Kurdistan Region and its governance stands out significantly despite numerous challenges. This support is notable because the Kurdistan Region has long been a hub of peaceful coexistence and religious freedom. The region’s political leadership has garnered global attention through its effective and diplomatic policies,” he added.
The international community’s backing reflects the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to democracy, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, underpinned by a soft and hopeful diplomatic approach.
Historical context also highlights U.S. support under President Barack Obama during the 2014 ISIS attacks on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The international coalition’s support, including military coordination and air support, was crucial in defending Erbil and the Kurdistan Region. Obama emphasized the importance of protecting the Kurdistan Region as a sanctuary for peaceful coexistence among religious communities.
