PM Barzani launches Kurdistan’s largest cancer hospital

Prime Minister Barzani’s launch of Kurdistan’s largest cancer hospital in Erbil marks a transformative step in advancing healthcare across the region.

Kurdistan oKRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani marked a historic moment by laying the foundation stone for the largest cancer treatment hospital in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. The ceremony, held in Erbil, signaled a major leap forward in healthcare infrastructure, with the hospital poised to offer high-quality cancer care for the entire region.

Barzani’s speech at the event emphasized the significance of this development, not only for the citizens of Erbil but for all of Kurdistan and Iraq. “I am pleased to lay the foundation stone of a very important hospital in Erbil, a cancer treatment facility that will be built to high-quality standards and will serve citizens across Kurdistan,” he stated. PM Barzani expressed pride in the existing healthcare facilities in the region, noting that many patients from other parts of Iraq already turn to Kurdistan’s hospitals for treatment.

However, he acknowledged that the health sector in the Kurdistan Region still requires substantial reform and improvement. Since the beginning of his tenure, health sector reform has been a priority. “The public and private sectors must develop in balance and in parallel, with improvements in the quality of health services in public hospitals. Citizens should feel comfortable and well-served in these facilities,” he emphasized. Barzani also stressed the need to continue modernizing healthcare, especially in light of the increasing number of cancer cases, which reflect global trends. “We must work diligently to reduce the causes of cancer and provide the best treatments for our patients,” he said.

To alleviate the financial burden on cancer patients, PM Barzani announced support for a fund dedicated to assisting those undergoing cancer treatment. He urged both the private sector and citizens to contribute to the fund, stressing that a collective effort is necessary to ensure accessible healthcare for all.

The KRG remains committed to elevating the quality and accessibility of healthcare services in the region. “We will do our utmost to improve the health situation and raise the standards of our hospitals and health institutions,” Barzani declared. He also highlighted the region’s strong scientific and medical capabilities, noting that Kurdistan is home to highly skilled doctors who can provide world-class care to its citizens.

As the construction of the cancer treatment hospital moves forward, the project stands as a testament to the KRG’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare for all its residents and to position Kurdistan as a leading healthcare hub in Iraq.
