Prime Minister Barzani’s initiative to build the Khurmal Corniche will enhance tourism and irrigation, fostering regional development and economic growth.
Following Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s attention to the province of Halabja, Khurmal district will receive increased focus as part of Halabja. It aims to become an important tourist destination, especially with the decision to develop a corniche similar to that of Zakho.
On June 30, 2024, Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, made an important visit to both Sulaimani and Halabja. During this visit, he laid the foundation stone for the Halabja silo and held meetings and discussions with local administrative officials. Additionally, he engaged in several face-to-face discussions with residents from various areas within both provinces and the surrounding administrative units.
During these meetings, provincial administrative officials and citizens addressed the problems and shortcomings in their areas, presenting several requests and proposals to the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister listened attentively to their demands and assured them that the Kurdistan Regional Government would do everything possible to serve the people of both provinces, as well as their districts and villages.
In this context, the Prime Minister made several important decisions aimed at better serving the citizens of Sulaimani and Halabja, as well as the two independent administrations of Raparin and Garmiyan.
One of the key objectives of the visit was the Halabja master plan, which is set to be implemented within 450 days at a cost exceeding one billion dinars from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s budget. Full coordination and support will be ensured between the offices of the Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism and Halabja province to implement the master plan as effectively as possible.
Khurmal district, recently designated as a district by the KRG, is set to become the focal point for regional reconstruction. The KRG aims to further develop Khurmal by implementing several key projects.
On the recommendation of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, a delegation from the Ministry of Water Resources is designing a corniche project in Khurmal, which promises both irrigation and tourism benefits.
Karwan Sabah Hawrami, Director General of Water Resources, told The Kurdish Globe: “After Prime Minister Masrour Barzani ordered Khurmal to become a district, we were tasked with assessing how to best utilize its water resources.”
While tourists occasionally visit the area, they currently lack adequate services. The new project is expected to enhance both tourism and irrigation. “This is a significant initiative for both sectors, and the location is very advantageous,” he added.
Hawrami noted that the influx of tourists to the youth water (the corniche) area will be crucial for water recharge and for developing tourist facilities that will generate substantial income for the region. “These developments are a direct result of the Prime Minister’s attention to Halabja province, and this focus will continue,” he said.
Khurmal district is located in Halabja province in the Kurdistan Region, with Khurmal town serving as its center. The district borders Penjwen to the north, Halabja to the south, Marivan and Sawlawa to the east, and Sayed Sadiq to the west.
