The KRG’s “Light Project” brings 24-hour electricity, delighting residents

The KRG’s “Light Project” aims to provide continuous, 24-hour electricity across the Kurdistan Region by 2026

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced that the “Light Project” is one of the most significant service initiatives for the citizens of the Kurdistan Region. The project aims to provide 24-hour electricity across the entire region by the end of 2026.

On October 17, 2024, during a visit to the Shadi neighborhood in Erbil, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani formally launched the “Light Project”. In his announcement, the Prime Minister said: “The Light Project is one of the most critical service projects for our beloved citizens. Our goal is to provide 24-hour electricity across the entire Kurdistan Region by the end of 2026.”

He noted that three months ago, the project was implemented on a trial basis in the Shadi neighborhood, where 24-hour electricity has been successfully provided. He added: “Today, I visited the neighborhood, and the residents expressed their satisfaction and happiness with the project.”

Masrour Barzani expressed his gratitude to private generator owners, acknowledging their support: “During the time when 24-hour national electricity was unavailable, they played a crucial role in ensuring that citizens did not go without power.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that the project’s primary goal is to benefit the citizens. As such, generator owners will continue to provide assistance during the transition period to ensure the project’s smooth and successful implementation.

He also announced that, following the success in the Shadi neighborhood, the second phase of the project will be launched in the Naz Naz neighborhood on October 18, with the Bakhtiari neighborhood to follow shortly after.

In addition to Erbil, Masrour Barzani revealed that the plan to provide 24-hour electricity will gradually extend to other governorates and independent administrations within the Kurdistan Region. Currently, several neighborhoods in Sulaymaniyah have been designated for project implementation, and local authorities have been instructed to cooperate and take necessary steps.

Simultaneously with Erbil, this service will be extended to all cities, towns, and governorates across the Kurdistan Region. Several neighborhoods in Sulaymaniyah and Duhok have been selected for the project’s rollout, and local authorities have been asked to facilitate its implementation in these areas, with the goal of eventually reaching all parts of the Kurdistan Region.
