Erbil Marathon: A celebration of sport and community

The 11th International Erbil Marathon, a highlight of the city’s sporting calendar, brought together hundreds of local and international runners for a day of athleticism and awareness. The marathon, which attracted a diverse group of participants, underscored Erbil’s growing commitment to sports and community engagement.

Held under the slogan “Clean Breath, Healthy Running,” the event aimed to raise public awareness about environmental cleanliness. Organized by the Erbil Marathon Organization for Sports and Peace, the 21-kilometer race featured strong participation from athletes across Iraq and beyond, including runners from Turkey, Iran, Jordan, and Syria.

This year’s marathon saw a notable increase in female participation, with many women competing fiercely for medals. Athletes from all cities in Iraq, as well as international runners, showcased their skills in a competitive and spirited atmosphere.

Winners in both the men’s and women’s categories were rewarded with financial prizes, with the first-place finishers each taking home 750,000 dinars. All participants who completed the race received commemorative marathon medals. The event was open to anyone, inviting both seasoned runners and newcomers to join the celebration of fitness and community spirit.
