Wounded Peshmerga becomes symbol in France

When Peshmerga Way was inaugurated at Parc André Citroën in Paris earlier this year, the ceremony carried more than symbolism. Standing alongside President Masoud Barzani was Salman Farman, a Peshmerga veteran whose story of sacrifice embodies the struggle of Kurdistan against ISIS.
Farman lost both legs, his right hand, one eye, and one ear in the fight against the terror group. Despite his severe wounds, he has become a living symbol of courage, often described as a “living martyr” in Kurdish and international media.
Speaking to Kurdish Globe, Farman recalled the reception in France:
“I was highly respected there. The French love President Barzani very much. On the day Peshmerga Way was opened, people took pictures with me, and young men put their arms around me. Their welcome amazed me. I thank them for opening this path in such a large park in Paris. It means a lot for the future generation of Kurds and for the French to learn about the Peshmerga and the geography of Kurdistan.”
For Farman, the event marked more than a personal honor—it was a milestone for the Kurdish people.
“My participation in the opening of Peshmerga Way was a historic day,” he said. “This great achievement was President Barzani’s role, a magnificent role for Kurdistan and the Peshmerga. It boosted our morale. France made history, and through this path, the friendship between our peoples will remain in memory.”
Despite his devastating injuries, Farman’s determination remains unbroken.
“I stand firm with high morale and have dedicated my will to Kurdistan,” he said. “Seeing President Barzani gave me immeasurable strength. He is like a mountain behind the Peshmerga, and our inspiration comes from him.”
He added that his personal tragedy carries a wider message for the next generation:
“If a person’s will is broken, it’s the end. For us, this tragedy is a beginning—to tell the next generation that protecting Kurdistan requires sacrifice. In France, people looked at me with admiration. President Barzani gave everyone strength and morale. The French were amazed by him.”
For many Kurds, the opening of Peshmerga Way is not only a recognition of their sacrifices but also a reminder that their struggle for freedom and dignity is remembered far beyond Kurdistan.
