President Barzani mediates peace in Rojava amid Syrian clashes

As tensions escalated in Syria between the Syrian army and Kurdish forces, the Kurdistan Region maintained a consistent policy of negotiation, dialogue, and peaceful resolution, avoiding violence and exclusion. Central to these efforts was President Masrour Barzani, whose decisive diplomacy played a key role in mediating between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government.
Political observers and media reports highlight that Barzani’s intervention led to a comprehensive ceasefire and a roadmap for integrating institutions and stabilizing Rojava (Western Kurdistan). According to Al-Mada newspaper, Barzani’s “silent diplomacy” involved coordination with countries including Turkey, Qatar, Italy (Vatican), and even communication with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy. His efforts were credited with preventing further bloodshed and maintaining regional stability.
Sherzad Hussein, a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) member, emphasized that Barzani’s approach, based on dialogue and negotiation, has consistently safeguarded Kurdish rights. Political parties and observers in Rojava noted that Erbil’s leadership and political influence were pivotal in pressuring the international community toward a peaceful resolution.
One observer remarked, “The eyes of every Kurd and the world are on the Kurdistan Region, the only free area with its own parliament, government, and recognized flag. President Barzani, as a Marja for the Kurdish people, serves as a protector for all of Kurdistan. When tensions arose in Rojava, Erbil became the hub for resolving complex issues through diplomacy rather than war.”
Barzani’s humanitarian and military support has long bolstered Kurdish resilience. Fadi Mar’i, head of relations for the Kurdish Future Party in Syria, highlighted Barzani’s past interventions, including the 2014 ISIS attack on Kobani, and his current efforts through the Barzani Charity Foundation. These actions, Mar’i said, “have empowered Kurds in Rojava to maintain their identity and take pride in their heritage and leadership.”
Through diplomacy, dialogue, and consistent engagement, President Barzani has reinforced the Kurdistan Region’s role as a stabilizing force and a catalyst for Kurdish unity across all four parts of Kurdistan.
