Peshmerga unification training marks strategic reform step

The coalition-backed program highlights reform efforts and the strategic importance of Peshmerga unity for regional stability.

In a ceremony attended by a delegation from the Coalition Forces, the Minister of Peshmerga, and senior Peshmerga commanders, the first joint training course focused on the “Decision-Making Process” for Peshmerga forces in Areas 1 and 2 officially commenced.
Minister of Peshmerga Shoresh Ismail described the training as a historic step toward the unification and restructuring of the Peshmerga forces and the foundation of a unified national army. He stated that the program aims to strengthen the leadership capabilities of officers, particularly in military decision-making under pressure, and stressed the importance of continued support from the international Coalition, especially the United States, to complete the unification process.
He further emphasized that the Peshmerga is not merely a military institution but represents the national identity of the people of Kurdistan. According to him, strengthening the Peshmerga directly contributes to regional peace and stability. He noted that the forces are entering a new phase of institutional development, including the formation of two military commands and 11 infantry divisions under the Ministry of Peshmerga.
Dr. Nejat Ali, Commander of Area One, also highlighted the necessity of unification, stating that current regional conditions require a fully integrated and professional force. He stressed the importance of modernization, military training, and instilling values of loyalty and patriotism among the ranks. He also warned that evolving regional threats, including drone and missile attacks, demand enhanced readiness and improved defensive capabilities.
He called on Coalition partners to support the identification of emerging threats and to provide advanced military assistance to protect the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional status and security environment.
Colonel Dick Pavluik, Chief of the U.S. Military Group in the Kurdistan Region, said the training reflects ongoing cooperation under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Peshmerga and the U.S. Department of Defense. He reaffirmed the Coalition’s commitment to supporting reform efforts aimed at unifying and professionalizing the Peshmerga forces, expressing hope that the outcomes of these efforts will soon become visible.
