The new 60,000-square-meter park in Ankawa features major recreational, green, and cultural facilities
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani of the Kurdistan Regional Government officially inaugurated the “Hanging Gardens of Babylon” park in the Ankawa district of Erbil.
At the beginning of the ceremony, the Prime Minister toured the park’s main sections, with the project originally launched in October 2024. The development spans 60,000 square meters and includes a 415-meter elevated walkway, a 6-meter artificial hill, a 70-meter pedestrian tunnel, and extensive green spaces with around 25,000 trees and 30,000 square meters of lawns.
The park also features a 700-meter running and exercise track, designated event areas, and water fountains covering more than 500 square meters. One of its most notable landmarks is a 63-meter-high flagpole, holding the tallest Kurdistan flag.
Named after one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the project references the historical Hanging Gardens of Babylon, traditionally linked to King Nebuchadnezzar II and Queen Amytis of Media.
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Barzani said the park represents a symbol of cultural authenticity and coexistence, adding that it will serve families, children, and visitors as a public recreational space.
He emphasized that the park includes facilities for sports and wellness, aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles among citizens and youth. He also expressed pride in the region’s ongoing development, noting improvements in public services and urban spaces.
Barzani thanked the Ministry of Municipalities, the Municipality of Erbil, the Municipality of Ankawa, and the implementing company for their contributions to completing the project.
