Songs of Zagros

Another corner of my life

By Dr. Salar Osman

Here, in this column—here among the words, sentences, meanings, and insights of this column —we want to talk about culture. Culture can encompass all of life, including religion, politics, and commerce.
We often need a medium, a link, and a platform that brings us all together. That medium is culture, which connects us and serves as a gathering platform for everyone, despite all our differences.
We live in a geography defined by differences, and at the same time, by major struggles: struggles over existence, land, and identity. Therefore, we must bring our differences together so that we can move our problems toward solutions.
Culture is light; it illuminates the heart, the soul, and every doorway. The Kurdish people are rich in culture, and Kurdistan is even richer. What is poor in between is the investment of this culture into life, something we have severely neglected. In short, up to now, we have not been able to invest in this rich culture!
Culture should make life better, stronger, and brighter. Briefly put, whatever darkness exists comes from a lack of culture. Cultural fields must take the place of political tensions and troubles, firmly establishing themselves as solutions. This requires wisdom. So, let us ask: who are the wise, and are the important positions of governance in their hands?
We do not ask this question out of pessimism, but we are not without problems either. Thus, every morning, Kurds must wake up with new strength and energy to work better—yes, to work better, but with the awareness that culture is the key, the light, the guiding hand, and the solution.
In every issue of this biweekly newspaper, The Kurdish Globe, here in this column, “Songs of Zagros,” we will discuss the smallest and largest matters of life through a cultural lens. In doing so, we become part of the key, the light, the guiding hand, and the solution.
In the next edition, I will briefly discuss “Zagros”—Zagros as a term, a concept, and an understanding.
