Identity is not a fixed and fixed phenomenon, but a living process that evolves with the changes of the times. In the Kurdistan Region, modernity has not only led to the fading of national identity, but also acts as a “driving force” to reshape a modern Kurdish identity that is capable of competing and asserting itself at the global level.
In the past, Kurdish identity was seen as more of a “defensive” identity that was protected in the mountains and in the trenches of struggle. However, due to the political and economic stability that the party and the national government have built in the region, this identity has undergone a fundamental change. The current state of affairs is a “constructive and open-minded” one. Today’s Kurdish people are introducing their identity to the world through scientific innovation, technology, art and diplomatic language. Modernity has given us the tools to turn our local messages into an effective global discourse.
Identity Changes in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq are moving in the direction of “active citizenship.” Through education and development projects, the government is working to create a generation that is proud of its history and heritage and possesses the skills of the 21st century. This type of identity, which is called a “growing identity,” is a sign of the vitality and strength of society. We live in an era where globalization is trying to erase cultural characteristics, but the Kurdistan Region has been able to turn modernity into a “shield” to protect its original language and heritage.
This is where the role of the political leadership is in maintaining this balance. When the government emphasizes national dignity and the protection of regional entities, it is in fact working on “identity defense” against foreign ideological storms. The change in identity in Kurdistan is a positive change because it is moving towards systematization and civilization without abandoning its historical roots.
Finally, we can say that modernity in the Kurdistan Region has led to the birth of a “confident” identity. The Kurds are now known not only as a nation with an ancient history, but also as a modern and advanced entity in the region. This was a great goal that was being strived for, and now with the construction of the state and institutions, it is becoming a reality. Our identity in the future will be an identity that will preserve both its Kurdish authenticity and shine as a successful example of modernity in the Middle East.
