The Kurdistan Region at the Epicenter of Change; Global Development and the Diplomacy of Stability

By Frsat Said Shkur

The continuous advancement of the Kurdistan Region on the international stage is not a random occurrence, but rather a true reflection of its geopolitical influence. In a region dominated by conflicts and where changes occur at an astonishing pace, Erbil has managed to assert itself as a stronghold of power. To understand this strategic phase of the Kurdistan Region and its effective role, we can analyze the equation through the following key points:

1. Geopolitical Position and Global Development:
It is important to note that the Kurdistan Region is advancing remarkably on the global stage. This diplomatic and economic progress indicates that the Region’s geopolitics has become a vibrant and effective center. Erbil is now an epicenter and decision-making hub, having a direct impact on regional and global equations, prompting major powers to view the Region’s role with importance and give it special consideration.

2. A Victim of Conflicts, Not a Crisis Creator:
If we carefully analyze the past and present events of the Middle East, we see that the Kurdistan Region has never been a part of the problems or a source of instability. However, it has unjustly and continuously borne the brunt of the region’s wars and conflicts. Despite paying this heavy price, Erbil has always remained part of the outlet and the solution. Moreover, from here, guided by a national vision, solutions to the problems of the other parts of Kurdistan are offered in a peaceful and modern manner.

3. The Constitution and Principles of Partnership and Consensus:
The stability of Iraq and the region is tied to respecting constitutional rights. The Kurdistan Region’s unwavering policy in dealing with Baghdad and Iraq is that the principles of “partnership, balance, and consensus” must be the main criteria for governing the country, and work must be done entirely within the framework of the Constitution. Abandoning these principles will damage the development of all of Iraq.

4. President Barzani’s Vision for Stability and Prosperity:
The core of this strong position and the protection of the Region from these fierce waves goes back to the vision and views of President Masoud Barzani. His strategy has always been to ensure a stable future for the Kurdistan Region and even Iraq. The main goal is for people to live in a peaceful and prosperous atmosphere and to put an end to futile conflicts.

5. Economic Diplomacy and International Understanding:
Recent meetings with Tom Barrack, the US President’s Special Envoy for Iraq and Syria, alongside President Barzani, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, and KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, are proof of the world’s great trust in the Kurdistan Region. These types of understandings are a key factor in improving relations and formulating a better, more successful economic policy. Particularly regarding the issue of oil and energy, the Kurdistan Region consistently pursues a balanced and rational policy, which has further increased the confidence of foreign investors.
As a result of these facts, we come to the conclusion that a peaceful and strong Middle East undoubtedly requires full coordination with the Kurdistan Region. Without a strong and stable entity in Erbil, a true balance cannot be built in this complex region.
