Documentary captures the Peshmerga’s fight against ISIS

The documentary film “Khazir,” directed by Nizar Mama, was screened at Empire Cinema in Erbil as part of the “Cinema and the Public” project organized by the Erbil Directorate of Cinema and Theatre.
The film documents an important period of the Peshmerga’s war against ISIS in the Khazir area, focusing on the battles fought along one of the key front lines between Erbil and Mosul.
Mama said “Khazir” uses archival images and evidence from the front lines to document the Peshmerga’s military operations against ISIS and their efforts to defend the surrounding areas. According to the director, Peshmerga forces used the Khazir front to maintain pressure on ISIS and push the group back from several areas and villages.
The documentary also presents Khazir as an important site of memory from the war against ISIS, highlighting its connection to the defense of Erbil and military operations toward Mosul.
As part of the “Cinema and the Public” project, the Erbil Directorate of Cinema and Theatre screens a film free of charge every Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Empire Cinema in Erbil.
