Bridging cultures and inspiring global change through the soft power of cinema and dedicated humanitarian activism efforts
Hayman Homer, an American actor, film producer, and activist of Kurdish origin, is an inspiring figure blending his rich heritage and diverse experiences to create a profound impact on both the entertainment industry and global humanitarian efforts.
Hayman Homer’s journey from Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, to the limelight of the American entertainment industry and the heart of Nashville, Tennessee, is a testament to his resilience and dedication. Born in the Kurdish capital, Hayman overcame personal tragedy and cultural barriers to carve a niche in the competitive world of the film industry. As an immigrant, he had to surpass many obstacles at the beginning of his journey. A graduate of Salahaddin University’s College of Political Science and International Relations, his diverse background, ambiguous looks, and linguistic talents enrich his performances, making him a unique figure in the acting world.
His activism is fueled by a deep connection to his Kurdish roots and the legacy of his father, who was a revolutionary and an intelligence operative for the Kurdish peshmerga army from the 70s to the 90s, as an American ally, and later became a prisoner of war. He sacrificed his life for Kurdish independence, freedom, democracy, and preserving the Kurdish people’s rights and national identity against the former Iraqi regime. Hayman is continuing his father’s legacy by taking the Kurdish people’s inspiring story through the lenses of cinema on the world stage.
He was raised by a single mother alongside his seven siblings: five brothers and two sisters. “The struggle and efforts my mother went through to raise a family and the sacrifice my father gave are what motivate me the most,” Hayman told The Kurdish Globe.
Hayman’s passion for his heritage and humanitarian causes is evident in his involvement with the Nashville community. As a board member of the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation (KDC) and the Tennessee Kurdish Community Council (TKCC), he is dedicated to promoting the Kurdish-American special relationship. “The Kurds have a long history as the most trustworthy and loyal ally of the United States in the Middle East,” Hayman emphasized after participating in the signing of the sister-city pact, a commercial and diplomatic agreement between the governments of his American hometown of Nashville and his birth city of Erbil, in an official ceremony held in Nashville by the Mayor of Nashville, John Cooper, and the Governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw, on September 9, 2023.
His commitment to humanitarian work extends beyond community involvement. According to Saman Abdullah, spokesman for Salahaddin University, Hayman will be recognized for his substantial humanitarian activities in addition to his acting prowess. “Hayman’s dedication to making a positive difference and his strong ties to Kurdish heritage drive him in his humanitarian endeavors,” Abdullah said. Hayman has participated in numerous initiatives aimed at promoting education, aiding local communities, and providing essential supplies to underprivileged communities.
One of Hayman’s most notable achievements is his role in the historical epic film “The Messiah,” where he made history as the first Kurd to portray Jesus Christ. This groundbreaking performance is currently being screened at the Bible Museum in Washington, D.C. “It’s a role that transcends boundaries and brings attention to our shared human experience,” Hayman remarked.
Hayman’s work in the film industry is complemented by his efforts to build a cultural and commercial bridge between Hollywood and Kurdistan. He envisions establishing a filmmaking presence in Los Angeles while bringing film productions to Kurdistan to boost tourism and create jobs. “The great effect of soft power, especially through movies, is that we can influence and protect a nation’s vital identity through storytelling,” he reaffirmed to The Kurdish Globe.
His love for America and belief in the American dream made Hayman settle in the United States in 2017 after living between Kurdistan, Greece, and England in his early years. Living between Erbil, Los Angeles, and Nashville, Hayman’s vision for the future is both ambitious and crystal clear. He aims to inspire fellow students and aspiring actors to pursue their dreams regardless of the obstacles they face and the lack of resources. “If your mind can think it, your subconscious can feel it, and you have the courage to speak your dreams, then the universe will do everything in its power to help you fulfill them,” Hayman passionately manifested.
His powerful voice has brought global attention to issues such as human rights violations, the displacement of Kurds in the Middle East, and the urgent need for international solidarity. Through speeches and public appearances, Hayman has inspired countless individuals to support social efforts. “Many people have been motivated to take action by Hayman’s work. It is his contagious positivity, uplifting energy, his larger-than-life persona, and undeniable talent that inspire people around him the most. When you are with him, he gives hope and the notion that anything is possible,” Abdullah added.
Hayman’s dedication to both his craft and his humanitarian efforts stands as a testament to his remarkable character. His story is a powerful reminder that one individual, driven by passion and purpose, can make a significant impact on the world.
As Hayman continues to shine on the global stage, his contributions to both the arts and humanitarianism cause inspiration and uplift communities. Besides his films, Hayman also starred in country and Hollywood music videos as well as in several national and global campaign commercials as a lead model.
Hayman Homer’s journey is far from over. He is just starting. His big global vision needs support as he continues to captivate audiences and break new ground in the film industry. He remains a beacon of hope and a champion for change, bridging cultures and inspiring a brighter future for young people.
