Safin mountain becomes a captivating tourist destination

Shaqlawa buzzes with tourists in the summer, but the foothills of Mount Safin attract visitors year-round, offering breathtaking views and a charming escape from the city center. Located just about an hour’s drive from Erbil, the area is a popular spot for hiking and outdoor activities.

Mount Safin rises to 1,828 meters above sea level and features a diverse landscape primarily composed of limestone. This terrain ranges from compact rock, which offers limited natural protection, to softer, sandy sections that also lack significant shelter. While sport climbing has been established in a small area at the southwestern edge of the main ridgeline, there’s potential for longer routes higher up in the canyon or along a cliff band further east, accessible via main hiking trails leading to the summit.

Currently, the existing sport climbing area features approximately 15 routes equipped with closely spaced bolts and two-bolt chain anchors at the top. On the left side of the area, climbers can find three routes in the 5.6 to 5.8 range, each with around 12 bolts. The right side offers around 8 to 10 shorter routes with difficulty levels reaching up to 5.11.

To reach this stunning destination, visitors can drive from Erbil along the main Erbil-Shaqlawa road, heading north toward Shaqlawa. After about 30 minutes, you will pass through a tunnel and should take the first right turn, marked by a petrol station at the corner. Continue for another five minutes until you spot a trailhead leading into a canyon on your left, just past a quarry. There, you can park on the wide right shoulder or in a muddy area to the left. From the parking area, follow the trail uphill for 3 to 5 minutes until you arrive at the mouth of the canyon, where you’ll see bolts on the short wall to your right.

The foothills of Mount Safin are recognized as a prime tourist destination, drawing visitors from southern and central Iraq, as well as international travelers. The area has seen substantial development, featuring restaurants, mosques, roads, and charming houses that enhance its appeal, making it a beloved retreat for residents of Erbil and beyond. Whether you’re hiking, climbing, or simply enjoying the scenery, the Safin Mountain foothills promise an unforgettable experience.
