Erbil citadel renovation and new hotel plans

The ongoing renovation of Erbil Citadel, the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement, is progressing rapidly under the close supervision of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. Recent progress includes the successful restoration of 10,600 square meters of the ancient site.

A key focus of the renovation has been the improvement of the visitor experience. Several alleys on the main street have been extended and widened, enhancing pedestrian flow and accessibility. The historic citadel’s bathhouse, a significant archaeological and cultural landmark, is nearing completion after extensive restoration work.

Looking ahead, the Kurdistan Regional Government has ambitious plans to further enhance the Citadel’s appeal. These plans include the installation of comfortable seating areas throughout the site, providing visitors with opportunities to rest and enjoy the unique atmosphere. Additionally, the installation of improved lighting will enhance the safety and ambiance of the Citadel, especially during evening hours.

A major highlight of the future development is the planned construction of an international restaurant and a renowned hotel within the Citadel. These additions are expected to significantly boost tourism and contribute to the local economy while preserving the historical integrity of the site.

UNESCO recognized Erbil Citadel as a World Heritage Site in June 2014, acknowledging its exceptional cultural and historical significance. The Citadel stands as a testament to the enduring human spirit and serves as a vital hub for diverse communities and religions.
