Lion cubs born at Erbil zoo become new tourist attraction

Several lion cubs have been born at the Erbil Zoo in Hawler (Erbil), captivating visitors with their beauty and rarity. The parent lions, brought from outside Kurdistan, are cared for according to international standards, ensuring their health and well-being.
Lions have long been symbols of strength worldwide. About 2,000 years ago, lions roamed much of Europe but gradually disappeared, now found only in Africa and northwest India. These carnivorous felines hunt prairie animals and can reach lengths of up to three meters, weighing between 180 and 225 kilograms. Female lions, smaller than males and distinguished by a tuft on their heads, often take the lead in hunting while the cubs feed eagerly.
Known for their powerful roar, lions live in groups ranging from 4 to 30 members, resting during the day and hunting at night. Their prey includes wild donkeys, deer, bears, jackals, sheep, and goats. Despite their fierce nature, lions can be tamed, as seen in circus performances. The new cubs at Erbil Zoo add to the zoo’s appeal as a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
