Halabja music group nurtures youth, revives Kurdish folklore

The Shinrwe Music School was established in 2017. Since then, nearly 150 students have joined the group and been introduced to musical instruments. Today, the group has 20 active students, most of them male, reflecting the spirit of coexistence that has characterized Halabja throughout its history.
The group regularly performs at ceremonies and special occasions, where boys and girls play instruments and sing authentic Kurdish folkloric songs, bringing joy and celebration to the events.
Members come from all components of the city, wearing Kurdish clothing and traditional attire specific to their backgrounds. On national occasions, the group works tirelessly to raise the artistic level of their community. However, the financial crisis has limited their ability to secure a dedicated space, leaving them financially constrained. Still, they remain determined to serve the art and culture of their city.
Most of the participants are young people who have recently emerged as part of Halabja’s cultural scene. Their efforts have opened the door for more students to join, ensuring the school’s growth. The group also works to revive old Kurdish songs once performed by renowned artists such as Sabah Hawrami, Hoshyar Hamafararj, Marwan Safadin, and others from the region.
