Kurdish parties unite, demand recognition from Damascus

Rojava Kurdish parties urge Syria to enshrine Kurdish rights and unity in its new constitution.

Some Kurdish parties in Rojava expressed deep concern over Presidential Decree No. 188 of 2025 issued by Syria’s presidency, which removed Newroz, the Kurdish national festival, from the country’s official holiday list. They called for Kurdish rights to be constitutionally guaranteed in Syria’s new constitution.
Abdulrahman Apo, a Kurdish politician from Rojava, told The Kurdish Globe: “Now, especially after the meeting between President Barzani and Mazloum Abdi and the recent Kurdish National Congress between ENKS and QSD, a new spirit of unity has emerged among Kurdish parties in Rojava. They aim to speak with one voice in Damascus and demand their rights.”
Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Front of Syria, in a statement, stressed that Kurdish parties must jointly approach Damascus for dialogue and that no group should act unilaterally. It warned that persisting in denying Kurdish national, cultural, and religious rights shows that the current transitional Syrian government has not broken away from the Baathist-era policies of rejecting Kurdish identity and erasing their historical suffering.
The statement urged Damascus to abandon this outdated mindset and adopt a new, inclusive approach.
The declaration also recalled the 1962 illegal census, which stripped hundreds of thousands of Kurds of Syrian citizenship, and the Arabization and demographic change policies targeting Kurdish regions — practices that, the Front said, still linger today.
In conclusion, the Kurdistan Front of Syria warned that ignoring Kurdish national and religious symbols — especially Newroz and the Yazidi New Year — contradicts the vision of a new, inclusive Syria that everyone hopes for. Recognizing these symbols, it said, is key to building a Syria founded on equality, mutual respect, and historical justice for all its peoples.
Addressing the issue, Abdulrahman Apo added: “There is a growing unity among the Kurdish parties. It’s essential that Kurdish rights be clearly guaranteed in Syria’s new constitution. The participation of Kurdish forces in the military structure must be ensured, and Kurds should have fair representation in Damascus governance and ministries.
Thanks to President Barzani, who helped bring together various Kurdish factions in Syria, we can now approach Damascus with a unified voice to demand our rights. In the past, internal Kurdish political divisions weakened our cause, but now there’s greater understanding between ENKS and QSD. A Kurdish delegation will soon visit Damascus for detailed talks on all issues, especially Kurdish rights in Syria’s future — an area where the Kurdistan Region can play an important and constructive role.”
