New leadership, key signings, and early wins spark hope among fans as the club reclaims its competitive edge in the Stars League
Erbil Football Club is entering a new era of ambition and resurgence after electing a new administration and revamping its squad ahead of the 2025–26 Stars League season. Following the resignation of the interim management team in March 2025, which came after a disappointing loss to Mina, the Erbil Governor oversaw preparations for free and fair elections. The process concluded with Safin Yasin being appointed as chairman and Basim Qasim as manager, bringing fresh leadership and renewed strategic focus to the club.
The new administration takes charge after a challenging season that saw Erbil finish 15th in the Iraqi Stars League with only 11 points, leaving fans frustrated and concerned about the club’s future. Determined to restore stability and revive fan confidence, the leadership has prioritized both on-field performance and off-field improvements. These measures include renovating the Franso Hariri Stadium’s turf and implementing stronger operational systems, signaling that Erbil FC is serious about re-establishing itself as one of Iraq’s premier football clubs.
In parallel with administrative reforms, the club has undertaken an ambitious overhaul of its squad. Strategic signings have addressed key positions, adding both talent and experience. Centre-forward Sherzod Temirov, arriving from Kitchee in the Hong Kong Premier League, and central midfielder Ali Shakhowan Omar from Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, have already made a significant impact. Defensive reinforcements such as centre-back Nduka Junior from Remo Stars FC, along with midfielders Pavle Radunović from Panevėžys and Mootez Zaddem from Esperance, provide balance and depth. Additional arrivals, including Humam Tariq, Dhulfiqar Younis Al-Imari, and goalkeepers Sarhang Muhsin and Kumel Al-Rekabe, ensure the squad is well-rounded and competitive across all positions.
The results on the pitch have reflected these positive changes. After just four matches, Erbil has accumulated 10 points, with three wins and a draw, currently topping the league on goal difference alongside Al-Gharraf and Diyala. The team has scored eight goals and conceded only four, demonstrating a combination of attacking potency and defensive solidity. A standout moment came in their fourth-round clash against Al-Karma, when Temirov opened the scoring in the 26th minute and Zaddem doubled the lead just before halftime. Although Al-Karma pulled one back, Erbil held on to secure a 2–1 victory, cementing their position at the top of the league.
Following this important win, Sunday, 5 October 2025, Dr. Safin Yasin, President of Erbil FC, hosted a special awards ceremony and celebratory dinner. The event was attended by Mr. Omid Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil and Honorary President of the club, who praised the team’s performances and their ability to delight fans and the wider community. Dr. Yasin promised a distinctive prize for players and staff, emphasizing the importance of recognizing effort and commitment. The players and technical staff expressed their gratitude to Dr. Yasin, the board of directors, and Mr. Khoshnaw for their support. The club also extended thanks to Duhok Football Club for hosting their recent home match, as renovations at the Franso Hariri Stadium continue. The administration assured fans that the stadium upgrades are progressing well and are expected to be completed soon, allowing Erbil to return to their traditional home ground.
Fans have expressed excitement and optimism about the club’s revival. “It feels amazing to see the team playing with confidence again. The new signings are making a real difference, and the wins make us proud,” said 22-year-old fan Salar Anwar. Sherwan Jalal, 45, added, “After last season’s struggles, it’s refreshing to see Erbil back on track. The administration and players are showing real commitment, and we’re happy with the results so far.”
On the field, key players have been pivotal in Erbil’s resurgence. Temirov leads the attack with four goals, while right winger Mustafa Qabeel has contributed three, creating crucial scoring chances. Zaddem has dominated the midfield, linking attack and defense effectively, while Nduka Junior has brought leadership and composure to the backline. Pavle Radunović has added creativity, vision, and stability to the midfield, allowing the team to transition smoothly between defense and attack.
With renewed leadership, a strengthened and well-balanced squad, and early-season momentum, Erbil FC appears poised to reclaim its position among Iraq’s top football clubs. Fans are hopeful that the club’s winning trajectory will continue throughout the season, and that Erbil FC will once again become a dominant force not only in Iraqi football but also on the Asian stage.
