Erbil Green Belt project aims to transform city environment

The Erbil Green Belt is one of the most significant strategic projects underway in the Kurdistan Region, expected to improve environmental quality, reduce climate related risks, and expand vegetation cover beyond international standards.
Before implementation, the project underwent extensive feasibility studies carried out by multiple committees with the support of international experts. Recently, Greek specialists conducted field assessments of soil, water sources, climate, and the local ecosystem to determine the most suitable tree species for Erbil.
Once completed, the city will be surrounded by a green zone measuring two kilometers in width and seventy eight kilometers in length. Around seven million olive and pistachio trees, chosen for their resilience to local weather conditions and drought, will be planted. This green belt will serve as a natural environmental barrier, limiting the spread of dust and pollutants into the city and achieving at least eight major environmental objectives.
A key aim of the project is to reduce urban temperatures and improve the city’s microclimate. It will also help absorb harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides and filter fine particulate matter.
The initiative is expected to enhance public health and quality of life by increasing green spaces for sports and recreation, while reducing pollution related illnesses. It will also support ecosystem protection by combating desertification, stabilizing soil, preserving plant life, and strengthening biodiversity.
Economically, the project is designed to create sustainable jobs across agriculture, maintenance, and related sectors.
Projections show that the Green Belt could absorb between 140000 and 210000 tons of carbon dioxide each year. The project will also strengthen air quality, water management, and soil preservation through artificial reservoirs and smart irrigation systems.
The Green Belt has the full support of the Kurdistan Regional Government and is being carried out under the supervision of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. International partners and local communities are also contributing to its implementation.
More than a tree planting campaign, the Erbil Green Belt represents a long term strategy for building a greener, healthier, and more sustainable city.
The KRG has taken major steps in recent years to protect the environment, including removing neighborhood generators and launching the Ronaki project. According to the Erbil Master Plan, the Green Belt is a central pillar of environmental preservation and will increase vegetation cover in the capital by 25 percent once completed.
