Denmark’s young Kurdish champion continues to shine

Denmark is home to a young Kurdish champion whose achievements extend beyond sports and into cultural pride and representation. At just 14 years old, Kurdish-Danish gymnast Valentina Maher Jamil has emerged as one of the country’s most promising young athletes, winning multiple national gold medals while remaining deeply connected to her Kurdish roots.
Born in Afrin in Western Kurdistan and raised in Denmark from an early age, Valentina discovered gymnastics at the age of four. Her talent quickly became evident, and through years of discipline, training, and determination, she rose to the top of national competitions. She has since claimed gold medals in several Danish championships, along with silver finishes, establishing herself as a standout figure in youth gymnastics.
Beyond her success as an athlete, Valentina also serves as an assistant coach, helping train younger gymnasts and passing on both technical skills and confidence. Her commitment reflects a maturity beyond her years and a desire to give back to the community that supported her journey.
What makes Valentina’s story especially powerful is her dedication to preserving her Kurdish identity. She speaks proudly of her heritage and has consistently emphasized the importance of cultural awareness. In a book published by her school about her achievements, she personally requested the inclusion of the Kurdistan flag, underscoring her pride in her roots.
Through her achievements, Valentina sends a clear message to Kurdish youth in the diaspora: success and cultural identity can go hand in hand. Her journey stands as an inspiring example of excellence, resilience, and pride.
