KRG leaders welcome Kurdish football club Amedspor to Erbil

A high-level delegation from Amed Sports Club (Amedspor) visited Erbil this week, meeting with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Nechervan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The delegation, led by club president Nahit Eren and Advisory Board Chairman Matin Klavuz, also included several board members.
During the meetings, both President and Prime Minister Barzani praised Amedspor’s achievements on and off the field. President Nechervan Barzani highlighted the club’s social impact, noting the enthusiasm it generates among Kurdish communities. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani emphasized the role of sports and athletes in promoting peace, coexistence, and unity, and reaffirmed his ongoing support for regional teams.
Amedspor, based in Diyarbakir (Amed in Kurdish), has a long history in Kurdish and Turkish football. Despite facing challenges and incidents of racism, the club recently topped the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Second League Red Group and earned promotion to the TFF First League. The team now aims to reach the Turkish Super League next season.
During their visit, the Amedspor delegation also met with the President of the Kurdistan National Union (KNU), Bafel Jalal Talabani, and discussed potential cooperation and strengthening of relations across sports and social initiatives.
The visit reflects the strong ties between Kurdish sports organizations and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the KRG’s continued support for athletes and clubs that foster unity and pride among Kurdish communities.
