Paris backs Kurdish rights amid regional tensions

French Foreign Minister Visits Erbil in Show of Solidarity

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot arrived in the Kurdistan Region this week for a high-profile diplomatic visit that underscored the depth of ties between Paris and the people of Kurdistan. Over two days, Barrot held separate meetings with President Masoud Barzani and Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, covering issues from the Syrian conflict and the ISIS threat to bilateral relations and the broader political landscape in the Middle East. The visit came at a critical juncture, with the region grappling with political transitions in Syria, persistent security threats, and the potential for escalating tensions involving Iran and Turkey.

Historical Bonds and Present-Day Challenges at the Heart of Talks

On Friday, Barrot traveled to the Pirmam district of Erbil to meet President Masoud Barzani. The French minister conveyed a special message from President Macron, underscoring the importance France places on its relationship with the Kurdistan Region and its continued support for Kurdish legitimate rights.
In a gesture rich with historical symbolism, Barrot presented President Barzani with a copy of a 1967 letter sent by the late Kurdish national leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani to former French President Charles de Gaulle, preserved in the archives of the French Foreign Ministry. Barrot described the document as a symbol of the long-standing friendship between the two peoples.
The discussions covered the situation in Syria, the peace process in Turkey, and political dynamics in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. President Barzani expressed hope that the peace process in Turkey would succeed through dialogue. On Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava), he emphasized his efforts to prevent political disputes from escalating into ethnic conflict and to avert any acts of ethnic cleansing against Kurds in Syria. He voiced support for the Damascus-SDF agreement and warned of the potential resurgence of ISIS, stressing the need for effective coordination to counter the threat.
