Kurdish club Amedspor secures historic promotion to the Turkish Super League

Landmark achievement marks a turning point for Kurdish representation in football, blending sporting success with cultural significance and regional pride.

Amedspor, widely regarded as a Kurdish club representing the city of Amed (Diyarbakır), has secured a historic promotion to the Turkish Super League for the first time in its history, following a dramatic 3–3 draw against Iğdırspor in the final round of the TFF First League.
The result, combined with a 1–1 draw between Erokspor and Pendikspor, ensured Amedspor finished second in the standings with 74 points, confirming their place in Turkey’s top division. Under the leadership of head coach Sertaç Küçükbayrak, the team completed a strong season built on attacking football, disciplined organization, and resilience in decisive matches. The club’s offensive strength was a defining factor, with striker Mbaye Diagne playing a central role and finishing as one of the league’s top scorers.
Founded in 1990, Amedspor has long held a unique position in Turkish football, not only as a competitive club but also as a symbol of Kurdish identity. Its supporters extend far beyond Diyarbakır, with a strong following across Kurdish communities in Turkey and abroad. Over the years, the club has faced political pressure, disciplinary actions, and heightened scrutiny, particularly surrounding expressions of cultural identity by fans and players. Despite these challenges, Amedspor has steadily grown into a resilient and ambitious side capable of competing at the highest levels.
The club’s home ground in Diyarbakır has become known for its intense atmosphere, where football and cultural expression intersect. Matches often carry significance beyond sport, reflecting broader social and cultural dynamics. For many supporters, the promotion represents not only athletic success but also increased visibility and recognition.
The achievement has drawn reactions from across the region. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani congratulated the club, describing the promotion as a moment of pride, while regional teams such as Duhok SC and Zakho SC expressed solidarity and support.
As the club prepares for its debut in the Super League, it enters a new phase that will bring greater competition, increased media attention, and higher expectations. The transition to Turkey’s top tier will test the team’s depth and adaptability, but it also offers an opportunity to establish itself among the country’s elite clubs.
Amedspor’s promotion stands as more than a sporting achievement. It reflects years of persistence, the strength of its supporters, and the role of football as a platform for identity and representation.
