Erbil ranks among global top startup cities with strong growth in innovation and investment

Erbil Province has maintained its position among the world’s leading startup ecosystems, reinforcing its status as one of the strongest business and innovation hubs in Iraq and the wider region. According to the latest StartupBlink Global Report 2026, Erbil ranked 932nd globally and remains the second-strongest entrepreneurial environment in Iraq, while also placing 29th in the Middle East.
The annual report evaluates startup ecosystems worldwide and is considered a key indicator of digital economy growth and innovation performance. Erbil’s continued presence in the top 1,000 cities reflects ongoing entrepreneurial activity and steady development despite regional economic challenges.
Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw highlighted a series of government-led initiatives that contributed to this achievement. He pointed to major environmental and infrastructure projects, including expanded green spaces, improved waste management systems, and regulations requiring green areas in residential developments. He also noted the implementation of the Erbil Green Belt project, which contributes to lowering temperatures and improving environmental conditions.
On public services, the governor emphasized progress in water supply through the “Emergency Fast Water Project,” which helped address long-standing shortages. He also reported significant improvements in electricity supply, with Erbil now benefiting from 24-hour power coverage and reduced reliance on private generators, contributing to a cleaner urban environment.
Khoshnaw further stated that Erbil has become a leading center for trade, investment, and company registration, attracting both local and foreign businesses. He added that ongoing infrastructure development, including major road and highway projects, continues to strengthen the city’s role as a regional economic hub.
