Kurdish documentary competes at Italian film festival

The documentary Land of Underground Women has been selected to compete at the 7th edition of the “Storie Parallele” International Film Festival in Italy, adding to its growing list of international appearances and accolades.

Written by Didar Omar Hamawandi and directed by Rekawt Hama Tofiq, the film has already garnered significant recognition at festivals across the globe, including in Western Kurdistan, America, Russia, Italy, and Spain, winning multiple awards. Its powerful narrative and poignant themes have resonated with audiences and critics alike.

The documentary tells the story of a man who has spent 13 years working in a cemetery dedicated to murdered women without identities. This man serves as the cemetery’s gravedigger, gardener, and guard, embodying the tragic weight of these unclaimed lives. The film paints a haunting portrait of forgotten women, addressing issues of violence and loss with deep sensitivity.
