Slemani’s historic neighborhoods stand the test of time

Some of Slemani’s oldest neighborhoods have retained their original appearance, with residents urging authorities to protect these historic areas from demolition and redevelopment. Many fear that traditional homes could be replaced by modern structures or parking lots, erasing a vital part of the city’s heritage.

Since 2019, a special committee has been working to preserve these neighborhoods. Slemani’s District Administrator, Awat Muhammad, emphasized the importance of maintaining the city’s historical identity. “The committee has played a significant role in protecting Slemani’s oldest neighborhoods. We urge families to support and cooperate in preserving traditional houses, alleys, and streets,” he stated.

In addition to government efforts, various organizations and activists are calling for stronger measures to safeguard these historic homes, some of which date back to the city’s founding. Their preservation is seen as essential to maintaining Slemani’s cultural and architectural legacy for future generations.
