Halabja has become another city in the Kurdistan Region to receive continuous electricity, marking a milestone in the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) ongoing efforts to provide 24-hour power under the Runaki Project.
Since the beginning of the ninth cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the KRG has undertaken major initiatives aimed at improving the region’s infrastructure. These projects span electricity, water, roads, agriculture, and other critical sectors, reflecting the government’s commitment to advancing Kurdistan’s economic development. Compared to other regions in Iraq, Kurdistan has achieved notable progress in building robust infrastructure, earning praise and appreciation from its citizens.
Halabja’s elevation from a district to a province, a promise made by former President Massoud Barzani in recognition of the city’s sacrifices, was later formalized through the efforts of Kurdish representatives in the Iraqi Parliament.
Regarding current development projects, the Head of the Council of Ministers’ Diwan, Mr. Omed Sabah, announced several initiatives for Halabja, covering roads, electricity, water, and sewage systems. Halabja’s Governor, Ms. Nukhsha Naseh, praised the KRG for its inclusive approach, noting that the city received continuous electricity ahead of all others. She described this step as a significant move toward strengthening Halabja’s provincial status.
Halabja holds a tragic place in history, having been targeted with chemical weapons by the Iraqi state in 1988. The attack resulted in the deaths of 5,000 civilians, including men, women, and children, and left thousands injured, many of whom continue to receive medical treatment.
The provision of uninterrupted electricity is seen as a major achievement in rebuilding and honoring the city, reflecting the KRG’s ongoing commitment to Halabja’s development and its residents’ welfare.
