Rashad Miran becomes first Kurd to receive Russia Pushkin Medal

Kurdish historian and scholar Dr. Rashad Miran was honoured at a ceremony held at the Cultural Center of Salahaddin University following his receipt of the prestigious Pushkin Medal, becoming the first Kurd to receive the award in Russia.
The ceremony was attended by government and party officials, academics, and university professors, who praised the achievement as a milestone for Kurdish scholarship and a source of pride for Kurdistan. Speakers highlighted that Dr. Miran’s recognition reflects years of dedicated scientific research and intellectual contribution that have helped bring Kurdish identity, history, and culture to the international stage.
The Pushkin Medal is one of Russia’s highest state honors, awarded by the President of the Russian Federation to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to culture, science, arts, and human development.
Dr. Rashad Miran, born in Shaqlawa in 1952, is a sociologist and a leading figure in Kurdish anthropology. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Baghdad and completed his master’s and doctoral studies in ethnography in Leningrad, Russia. From 1993 to 2021, he served as a professor in the Sociology Department at the College of Arts at Salahaddin University.
Over the course of his academic career, Dr. Miran has published more than 30 books, research papers, and translations. He is a founding member of the Kurdistan Sociologists Association and previously served as deputy head of the Kurdish Academy.
