Kurdistan Region boosts oil output as exports gain momentum

Security assurances and renewed cooperation aim to increase production and support the return of international energy companies

The Kurdistan Region has increased oil production to approximately 230,000 barrels per day as efforts continue to restore exports and encourage foreign energy companies to resume full operations. The move comes amid renewed coordination between Erbil and Baghdad and growing attention to energy security across the region.
A high-level Iraqi security delegation recently visited Erbil to discuss the protection of oil infrastructure and provide assurances to international companies operating in the Kurdistan Region. The visit focused on strengthening security around oil fields and addressing concerns that have affected production and investment in recent months.
The latest developments come as Iraq seeks to increase oil exports and stabilize energy revenues. Although exports from the Kurdistan Region resumed after a lengthy suspension, production levels have been affected by regional tensions and security concerns. Authorities are now working toward raising export capacity to 500,000 barrels per day.
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said the Kurdistan Region is contributing to broader efforts to support Iraq’s economy amid challenges affecting regional energy markets and international shipping routes. He noted that representatives of the government and energy companies recently held meetings in Baghdad to discuss conditions for expanding production.
As part of these efforts, a joint committee involving the KRG Ministry of Interior and Iraqi security authorities has been established to coordinate security measures and address the operational needs of oil companies. Additional technical teams are expected to conduct field visits to major production sites.
Energy firms have emphasized the need for stronger security guarantees and solutions to outstanding financial obligations before fully restoring operations. Discussions between company representatives and Iraqi officials have focused on protecting energy facilities and creating a stable environment for investment.
Under existing arrangements between Erbil and Baghdad, responsibility for oil exports has been coordinated through Iraq’s national marketing system. Negotiations continue regarding financial settlements, compensation issues, and transportation costs associated with export pipelines.
Officials hope that improved security, increased production, and closer cooperation between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government will help strengthen the energy sector and contribute to greater economic stability in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
